Documentary family photography is about honesty. It’s about authenticity. It’s about real life.
And because that’s what we are all about, we couldn’t be happier to be a small part of the Real Life Conference, taking place in Portland, OR in the fall of 2019. We are proudly sponsoring the conference aaaaaand they are generously giving away a ticket to one of you!
So why are we happy and proud? This conference is not just showing real life in photographs. And to be honest, it’s not just a conference. Yes, it’s an event that happens and there are speakers and lunches and presentations and so much to learn. But it’s a community. A community of women committed to seeing, honoring, and photographing all life, not just the lives we are used to. The creators of this event seek to tell stories of families and women from all walks of life, from all over the world. They seek to build genuine sisterhood, provide a platform for the marginalized, and embrace the uncomfortable.
Jenna and Kirsten have both been speakers at this event in previous years and both received as much as, if not more, than they gave. We could go on, but Real Life has all the info you need on their site. Read more about the vibe.
So about that free ticket. When you submit your photos in the Documentary Family Awards during our current call for entries, you’ll have an opportunity to nominate yourself or a deserving colleague. There is literally a box that will pop up for you to enter in your name or someone else’s. If you’re a male and thus unable to attend this conference, this is the time to honor and respect a female, non-binary or femme identifying photographer in your life. Think about who you admire and why they deserve to go and then type in that name.
