Behind the Photo with Tobias Löhr

1st Place in the “Nothing Is Better Than Real Life” category (Spring 2021). Photo by Tobias Löhr (Germany).

What is the story behind your winning photograph?

The older man on the picture is the already passed away grandfather of my wife who is also seen on the reflection in the left corner. The older woman in the reflection is the grandmother of my wife and she is holding our baby. She is also the woman in the back on the picture on the wall. The moment I’ve seen the reflection in the picture I knew this was the perfect way to tell a story of a family. Three generations in one picture with a beginning and an end.

What specifically drew you to this moment that you captured?

I always look for reflections. But it is not always working. Here everything fits perfectly.

What were the challenges you experienced while making this picture?

I had to find the right angle to keep me outside the frame and to show everything I wanted to show in the picture.

What meaning does this photo hold for you?

It will always have a special place in my heart. Firstly because it is my family in the picture, but especially because it was the first time we showed our smaller one to the grandmother of my wife.

How or why is photography important to you?

Photography is my passport to the world. In normal times I travel a lot. I love to get to know new people and cultures and my camera is always with me. This way I can tell little stories all around the world.
