Meals at the shelter are served in shifts to help accommodate the families, single men, and single women all living there, as well as anyone experiencing homelessness and staying on the streets. The shelter provides three meals a day and families with children are fed first. In order to get everyone that needs a meal in and out, the meal times for families are 5 a.m., 10:45 a.m., and 3:40 p.m. The Hendersons try to keep a few snacks in their room so that the kids can eat something again before bedtime. The family's space is scattered with clothes, shoes, school supplies, and toys because their room is only equipped with two small drawers and one cabinet for storage. Dallas attempts to free up some room by piling things on one of the children's bunk beds and having them sleep together on the other one. (Photo by Sara Easter, United States) Dallas and Jared steal a moment alone to discuss something with each other while the kids are occupied with a movie on T.V. The shelter has a rule that children must always be within direct reach of their parent when outside of the room. While this is important for safety on the shelter grounds, it makes it challenging for parents to get any time or space away from their kids. (Photo by Sara Easter, United States) Jared cuddles and plays with his youngest daughter. Because he works nights, he has to sleep some during the day. However he tries to wake up in time to play and interact with the kids for awhile before he leaves again. Baths and showers are part of the children's night time routine before they all lay down together to go to sleep. Jared just woke from a nap (he tries to sleep when he can despite the crowded and noisy room) and is about to get ready to leave for his job working overnight as a janitor in a nearby factory. (Photo by Sara Easter, United States) Sadie, 8 years old and the eldest of the children, comforts Mila, who is 1 and the baby of the family. Because their living space is small and crowded with the belongings of 6 people, Mila does not have much space to crawl or play in the room. She spends a good deal of time in her crib with her toys surrounding her. The family of 6 have been living in a space the size of an average bedroom and participating in the shelter's family program for 4 months. The Hendersons found themselves without a place to live after Jared lost his job and they did not have any family or friends who could take them all in together.
